Lovely to have you here!
Your propolis comes from Poland – straight from the beekeeper. We collect it straight from the hives and pack it in natural pieces – with nothing added. Here you'll find useful background and practical tips.
What is propolis?
Propolis is also known as bee glue. Bees collect resinous substances from tree buds – such as poplar, birch or alder – and mix them with wax. They use it to seal cracks and gaps in the hive.
Every piece is different
The colour ranges from yellowish brown to reddish brown and almost black, depending on which trees grow nearby and when it was collected. Propolis has a spicy, resinous scent. Small bits of wax or wood are completely normal in raw propolis.
Soft or hard?
Propolis turns soft and sticky when warm, and hard and brittle when cold. Our tip: put it in the freezer for a few hours before breaking it up. It will then snap easily, grate well or can be ground in an old coffee grinder.
How to store it
Keep it cool, dry and away from light in a well-sealed jar or bag. That way it keeps its aroma for a long time.
Making your own tincture
Many of our customers make a tincture from raw propolis: cover 1 part crushed propolis with about 4 parts drinking alcohol (approx. 70%) in a dark screw-top jar. Leave it at room temperature for 2–3 weeks and give it a short shake every day. Then strain it through a coffee filter and pour it into a dark dropper bottle.
Sticky fingers?
Propolis hardly washes off with water. Clean your hands and tools with a little alcohol or cooking oil first, then wash with soap. It's a good idea to cover the table with baking paper while you work.
Please note
Not suitable for people with an allergy to bee products or poplar buds – propolis can cause allergic reactions, including on the skin. Try a very small amount first. The tincture contains alcohol and is not suitable for children. If you are pregnant, breastfeeding or take medication regularly, please talk to your doctor first.
